Rolling Hills Elementary School

Summary:

Rolling Hills Elementary School is a public elementary school in Huntsville, Alabama, serving 483 students in grades PK-6 and part of the Huntsville City School District.

Rolling Hills Elementary faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools. The school has a much higher percentage of African American (71.84%) and Hispanic (19.05%) students, and an extremely high rate of students (over 85%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating high levels of economic disadvantage. Academically, Rolling Hills consistently ranks in the bottom 10-15% of Alabama elementary schools, with performance on standardized tests well below the Huntsville City and state averages across all grade levels and subjects. The student-teacher ratio at Rolling Hills has fluctuated in recent years, ranging from 15.8 to 24.5 students per teacher, which is higher than surrounding schools like Blossomwood Elementary and Academy For Academics Arts Elementary, which have significantly higher academic performance and more diverse student populations.

The persistent low performance and stark disparities at Rolling Hills Elementary are concerning and suggest that the school is struggling to provide a high-quality education to its predominantly low-income, minority student population. Addressing the factors contributing to these challenges, such as the high student-teacher ratio and socioeconomic challenges faced by the community, will be crucial in improving educational outcomes and ensuring equitable opportunities for the students at Rolling Hills Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Not the best, not the worst. We moved to this district this past year and were disappointed to look up the school and find it was not so great. However, it is apparent that it is a work in progress and they are striving to make it better. I will say the school has very involved parents who are enthusiastic about and devoted to all the children! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
