Huntsville Junior High School is a public middle school in Huntsville, Alabama, serving 418 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Huntsville City School District, which is ranked 83 out of 137 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating.

Huntsville Junior High School has a relatively diverse student population, with 43.3% White, 40.67% African American, and 11% Hispanic students. The school's statewide ranking has declined over the past decade, from 23rd out of 430 Alabama middle schools in 2013-2014 to 158th out of 442 in 2023-2024. Notably, the school performs much better for White students than for African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students, indicating significant achievement gaps.

Compared to nearby schools, Huntsville Junior High School's performance is generally on par with or slightly below the district and state averages. It lags behind higher-performing schools like Hampton Cove Middle School and Challenger Middle School. The school's relatively high percentage of students (around 38%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch may be a contributing factor to its academic performance, as research has shown that socioeconomic status can significantly impact student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is not safe. Constant fighting, cursing, disrespect. Admin is horrible. Kids are not taught to respect authority. Teachers have been disrespected, threatened, and even attacked (some hurt) by students. The students were caught on video and were back within a week. Many of the kids are bullied and scared to death of the kids that are not made to mind. Teachers are threatened to lose their job if they say what really goes on at the school. The general public has no idea the horrible things that go on within the walls of this school. There is no way I’d allow my children to attend here! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
