Wilkerson Middle School

Summary:

Wilkerson Middle School is a public middle school in Birmingham, Alabama, serving 390 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Birmingham City School District, which is ranked 117 out of 137 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Wilkerson Middle School has a predominantly African American student population, with 83.59% of students identifying as African American.

Wilkerson Middle School consistently performs below the state and Birmingham City averages on standardized assessments, with only 4.73% of 6th-grade students proficient in Mathematics, compared to 11.75% in Birmingham City and 31.56% statewide. The school has a low statewide ranking, typically falling in the bottom quartile of Alabama middle schools, and has received a 0 or 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. While the school's African American and Hispanic students perform relatively well compared to their peers in the district and state, Wilkerson Middle School struggles to support other subgroups, such as English Language Learners and students with special needs.

Wilkerson Middle School's performance is generally lower than that of nearby schools, such as WE Putnam Middle School, Jones Valley Middle School, and Green Acres Middle School, which are also part of the Birmingham City School District. These schools have similar student demographics but slightly higher academic achievement and school rankings. The high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds and the school's low ranking and rating suggest that Wilkerson Middle School may face significant challenges in terms of resources, staffing, and support for students, which could contribute to its underperformance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Our daughter ... has made leaps and bounds academically, and socially. She is safe, appreciated by her teachers and peers, and feels that all the kids are equals. My child entered this school and district during the 2015/16 school year because of a relocation and was not zoned for Wilkeson Middle School. However, my child has some learning differences and needs intervention classes and we were in need of excellent Resource Teachers. Wilkerson Middle School had the best Special Education Teachers Birmingham City School's have to offer.
The Principal was excellent in helping me enroll my daughter because she saw the learning needs that my daughter needed.
Communicate amongst Wilkerson faculty, teachers, and parent have all been good. When approached they have all bent over backward to help with any question or concern we may have. My child has done well here academically and has formed some friendships. Overall I am satisfied with the type of learning environment Wilkerson Middle School has to offer. The curriculum in teaching strategies is driven by data. It is a place were "Teaching and Learning" is their Core Business! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
